Penang Transportation - getting here

Penang is a handy sized island which is relatively easy to navigate with taxi and bus. Walking around Georgetown is a nice way to spend an afternoon, although it’s best to avoid the midday sun which can sap your energy. Many tourists get around Penang by trishaw and these quaint peddle cabs await visitors at popular attractions and hotels. Prices are cheap but remember to haggle hard to avoid being ripped off.

Most people arrive into Penang via the airport and this transport hub has international flights arriving from all over Asia and beyond. And it’s only a short taxi ride to the centre of Georgetown or the beach resorts of Batu Ferringhi, although bus services are available as well.

More on getting to Penang and away again

Trains ply the west coast of Malaysia and connect in Butterworth by the port. These take passengers as far as Bangkok to the north or all the way to Singapore to the south.

Long distance buses pick up passengers from the terminal in Georgetown but there are many more services departing from the mainland at Butterworth, so it is wise making the short crossing first of all and catch your onward connection from there for the best choice.

Ferries from Penang Island to the mainland take only twenty minutes and run all day long plus most of the evening too. Getting around Penang is a breeze with taxis available on most corners, although drivers are normally hesitant about using meters. Be sure to arrange a price beforehand before setting off on your way.
