Penang pictures - picture gallery

Penang is a historic island with many different cultures and attractions worth seeing, and we’ve tried to capture as much as possible with these pictures of Penang. Georgetown is buzzing day and night while there are national parks and numerous natural wonders to admire.

Our Penang pictures include everything from elaborately-decorated Chinese Klanhouses to the beaches, churches and mosques. Penang has much to offer the photographer, from images of popular tourist sites to charming snaps of everyday life.

We’ve attempted to nail down some of the essence of this sometimes chaotic place with this small collection of Penang pictures. They include the must-see sightseeing attractions and some of the off-beat characteristics of the island.

Notes on taking pictures in Penang

The island has plenty of photographic shops where tourists can download pictures of Penang onto thumb-drives, or stock up on film and supplies. You can even shop for a new camera or accessories as many of these stores offer fantastic bargains.

Remember to be mindful of religious customs and be respectful when taking pictures in Penang. Dress appropriately when entering a temple or church, and be extra respectful when religious rites are taking place. Although the whole island is considered fair game for the tourist, visitors should be extra careful during Friday prayers in the mosque and ask permission before getting up-close-and-personal with local people. Malaysians themselves love being photographed and Penangites will often approach Westerners to join them in snaps. This is a great way to meet local people and visitors should feel honoured if they are approached in this way.

Penang pictures are an essential souvenir of your trip to Malaysia and there are plenty of sights to photograph, so remember to take your camera everywhere you go. There is fantastic subject matter on show all hours of the day or night, with Batu Ferringhi night market great for atmospheric shots and the various food courts scattered around the island also brimming with local characters.

Safety is not generally a problem when taking pictures in Penang but, like anywhere, it is wise not to be too ostentatious with expensive equipment to avoid opportunistic pickpockets and petty thieves.
